Hoi An, located in Quang Nam province, about 30 km from Da Nang, has long been known as the “ancient gem” of Central Vietnam. Once a bustling trading port in the 16th – 17th centuries, it absorbed cultural influences from Japan, China, Portugal, and France, which are still vividly reflected today in its architecture, cuisine, and way of life.
Today, Hoi An is not only a top destination for domestic travelers but also a “mecca” for international visitors, thanks to its poetic charm, tranquility, and nostalgic atmosphere.
Riding a motorbike to Hoi An is truly a delight. You pass lush green rice fields, breezy coastal roads, rows of nipa palms, small rivers, and wooden boats drifting gently. As you approach the old town, everything seems to slow down — the noisy traffic disappears, replaced by the sound of temple bells, paddling oars, and the gentle aroma of incense, all pulling you into a different, poetic world.
Hoi An Ancient Town
The old town is the heart and soul of Hoi An. Its narrow, yellow-tiled streets, moss-covered rooftops, iconic yellow walls, and countless colorful lanterns at night create an unforgettable romantic scene.
Strolling through, you’ll discover centuries-old houses, tailor shops, pottery boutiques, and charming cafés with balconies overlooking the streets. At night, the town transforms into a magical wonderland as thousands of lanterns light up, reflecting beautifully on the gentle Hoai River.
A highlight experience is releasing paper lanterns on the river — each carrying wishes for peace and good fortune.
Japanese Covered Bridge
The Japanese Covered Bridge (Chua Cau), built in the early 17th century by the Japanese community, is considered a symbol of Hoi An and even appears on Vietnam’s 20,000 VND note.
This bridge reflects the fusion of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese architectural styles. The softly curved wooden bridge, mossy yin-yang roof tiles, and a small temple inside dedicated to the northern deity Tran Vo — the protector of peace — all make it unique.
Standing on the bridge, you can watch the peaceful river, listen to distant temple bells, and feel a rare serenity amid the lively old town.
Hoi An Market
For a real taste of local life, don’t miss Hoi An Market. Located near the old town, it offers everything from local delicacies, fabrics, and silk to countless delicious dishes.
What makes this market truly special is the warmth and hospitality of the vendors. They happily invite you to try cao lau noodles, mi Quang, white rose dumplings, sweet corn pudding, or to buy beautiful handmade lanterns.
It’s also a perfect spot to buy unique souvenirs, savor Central Vietnamese culinary specialties, and listen to local stories full of warmth and heart.
An Bang Beach
Just 4 km from the old town, An Bang Beach is considered one of the most beautiful and tranquil beaches in Asia.
It features smooth white sand, emerald green water, and gentle waves — perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or enjoying water sports like surfing and stand-up paddleboarding.
Beachfront bars and restaurants with lounge chairs, chill music, and refreshing cocktails make it an ideal spot to watch the sunset or relax the entire day.
